In 2005 The Good Intentions recorded a four- track demo CD with the help of Sack The Cat Studios in Liverpool. The CD, which began distribution in the early part of 2006, was meant as a tool to get the band a bit of attention and a few bigger gigs. To that end, the demo was sent to various venues, websites and radio stations. Following a review on Americana UK, the band began to receive requests from radio stations for a copy of the demo, so that they could play it on their shows and podcasts. The music’s stripped down and slightly unpolished sound got quite a bit of favourable attention, and The Good Intentions started to get some bigger gigs at home. To encourage further contacts and new friendships around the world, The Good Intentions set up a MySpace site.

One contact Peter has made is Charlie McGovern of Boronda Records in California. After some discussions, Charlie decided to try a "trans-Atlantic'’ experiment. The band did some recording in the UK and then the tracks were sent to California, where Charlie added his own sessions musicians, and has now completed the final production.

The results of this endeavour is the next chapter in The Good Intentions' story. The album is now released and available on this website, also on MySpace, ITunes, Boronda Records and by contacting us directly.

Pedal Steel

The pedal steel guitar is a type of electric guitar that uses a metal slide (the "steel") to intonate or shorten the length of the strings, rather than fingers on strings as with a conventional guitar. Unlike other types of steel guitar, it uses foot pedals and knee levers to affect the pitch, hence its name.
The pedal steel’s bending chords and complex riffs, makes it one of the most recognizable and characteristic instruments of American country music. Scott’s favourite steel players include:

Jay Dee Maness (Desert Rose Band), Lloyd Green (The Byrds – Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Nashville A-Team), Tom Brumley (Buck Owens, Rick Nelson), Al Perkins (Gram Parsons, Manassas), Buddy Emmons, Tommy White (Grand Ole Opry House Band)

Tenor Guitar

The tenor guitar is a slightly smaller, four-string version of the steel-string guitar. The instrument was developed so that players of the four-string tenor banjo could double on the guitar. Peter was drawn to the unique tone whilst watching Diana Jones in concert in Liverpool and knew he had to have one. The instrument’s unusual chord voicings have provided the inspiration for several new songs, which will join the live set soon.

Autoharp

After speaking with the band’s dear friend Bill Littleton, Gabi was inspired to learn the autoharp. The autoharp is a musical stringed instrument having a series of chord bars attached to dampers which, when depressed, mute all the strings other than those that form the desired chord. Autoharps became popular in the United States as bluegrass and folk instruments, perhaps most famously by Maybelle, June (Carter-Cash) and Sara Carter of The Carter Family.

Lap Steel

The lap steel guitar is typically placed on the player's lap, or on a stool in front of the seated player. Unlike a conventional guitar, the strings are not pressed to a fret when sounding a note; rather, the player holds a metal slide called a steel in the left hand, which is moved along the strings to change the instrument's pitch while the right hand plucks or picks the strings. Scott uses a variety of string tunings for different songs in the set, including “You Love Jimmie Rodgers” and “Soldier Boy”.
